“I have lead in my water due to the copper … so the water was undrinkable. In the meantime, Derifield’s water was rendered undrinkable. No one has denied the source was the decades-old salt yard. That resulted in more testing to find where the contamination was coming from. Testing of the water showed sodium and chloride. “I ended up going through three hot water tanks in less than two years,” he said, adding part of the plumbing exploded, resulting in hot water spreading across his basement. “Around three years ago, we started having problems with our plumbing at our house,” Derifield said, listing the numerous issues he and his wife faced with leaking pipes and corrosion in faucets, their well pump and their hot water tank. He described the damage to both his home and his rental property. ODOT intends to have the concrete dome moved by early June to the ODOT yard on Bass Lake Road north of state Route 322 in Munson Township.ĭemetriou thanked Derifield for his persistence and advocacy, which helped bring word of the issue to Columbus. The ODOT Parkman Outpost is a salt storage facility that has been contaminating the local water with sodium, chloride and bromide, making it unpotable for homes near the salt dome. Steve Demetriou, Geauga Public Health Administrator Adam Litke, township Trustee Joyce Peters and Geauga County Commissioner Jim Dvorak showed up to celebrate the event. Those in attendance came to learn the fate of the concrete salt storage facility owned by the Ohio Department of Transportation on the hill north of the town center. “The wheels of the government, they turn slowly, but they are turning.” “After a long process to get clean drinking water, I do have faith in our state and local government now,” Derifield said to a crowd of residents, local and state politicians and media gathered at the township community building.
